About Me

I love cycling to the beach & go for walks with Irene.
Waiting for the day when we both retire & spend time together doing the things that we both enjoy most.

"You'll see that simplifying is not necessarily about getting rid of everything we've worked so hard for. It's about making wise choices among the things we now have to choose from. It's about recognizing that trying to have it all has gotten in the way of enjoying the things that truly do add to our happiness and well-being. So it's about deciding what's important to us, and gracefully letting go of the things that are'nt."

Lunch at T2

Categories: 2006 | October 22nd, 2006 | by shiokman | no comments

After church service today, the 3 of us decided to have lunch at Changi Airport Terminal 2. It was’nt a bad idea afterall as the nice indoor air-con environment in the T2 kept us safely away from the haze & where we could also enjoy our meals & went “sight seeing” after that.

To look for a suitable place to eat, we walked from one end of the T2 to the other end on all the 3 levels. Never did I realised that there are so many different restaurants & shopping outlets in that building, because the only reason that I would drive there is to either drop people off or fetch them when they arrive. So after covering every inch of T2, we ended up at Swensen’s on Level 1, as Rachel wanted to eat Fish & Chips & we did’nt really like what they served at “Fish & Co” on Level 3.

This is situated on the extreme left-hand corner of the Arrival Hall & where MacDonalds is on the other right-hand end.

We can’t help but notice this showcase as we walked in through the entrance.

Rachel’s Fish & Chips, while Irene & myself ordered set lunches that came with soup & fruity yoghurt drink.

Looking at the other people dining there, I noticed that majority of them – if not all, did not go there just for ice-cream alone. I guess if Swensen’s were to only serve ice-cream as they did when they first opened here, it would’nt have survive today.

Irene & I did’nt really enjoy our not so tasty meals but Rach did.
However, Irene bought a pair of sandals & Rach got herself a magazine.

Total bill for our lunch : $52.78 inclusive of 10% SC & 5% GST.

Soup Restaurant

Irene took leave again today to spend time with me, as I only have 2 more weekdays left before I start on my new job next monday. So to show my appreciation, I suggested a lunch date with her to a wonderful restaurant, where they serve one of the best chicken dishes that I have ever tasted.

Now wait a minute! is’nt the title of this blog : Soup Restaurant??? then why am I bringing her there to eat chicken :?

Calm down…calm down….this restaurant is well known for their “Samsui Ginger Chicken” which is steamed chicken served with minced ginger and fresh lettuce leaves. In the olden days, this is actually a unique dish prepared by the Samsui Woman in Chinatown during Chinese New Year .

This is what the whole plate looks like & take note of the saucer in the middle filled with their delicious ginger sauce.

How you eat this dish is simply wrap a piece of chicken or two for my case & the thinly sliced cucumber with the lettuce leaf. Top it up with a generous amount of their yummy ginger sauce & carefully rolled it up. Take a big bite of it & enjoy the wonderful combined taste of tender chicken, ginger, cucumber & lettuce……Shiok!! :D

As you can see, I am so focused with preparing my lettuce roll that I did’nt realised Irene snapping away. Thank goodness, she did’nt managed to snap me taking a huge bite at my dish…..man! what a sight it would be.

We also ordered their Yong Chow fried rice – not too bad.
Although I am not a soup person, how can we not try their soups when we are in a Soup Restaurant?

This is their soup of the day which is basically cucumber – quite nice.

And this one is their “Ling zhi with lean pork soup” – I did’nt like this one though, quite strong herb taste but Irene did’nt mind it at all.

Of course we must not forget their delicious steamed peanuts which was served first before the main dishes arrived. Total bill : $39.40 inclusive of 10% Service Charge + 5% GST.

Well if you happened to be around Tampines area, why not check out this restaurant which is located at the basement level of Century Square.

Haze & the Mooncake

Categories: 2006 | October 9th, 2006 | by shiokman | no comments

Today is the start of my week long break from work – in other words, a jobless week. As I will begin on a new journey next monday with my new job, I intend to chill out & enjoy my temporary ‘retirement’ :D .

As usual, whenever either one of us is on leave, the significant other will follow suit when possible. So Irene & I took this opportunity to take a stroll along the East Coast in the morning, but with the recent haze that hit Singapore, the weather felt so hot & humid – even at the beach.

Just to show you how bad the haze was at one stage : This shot was taken on saturday afternoon just downstairs our block as we were walking to the market.

We did’nt spend much time at the beach & so decided to look for the traditional Teochew Flaky Moon Cake somewhere in Geylang. We have been eating the usual over-priced mooncake recently & really got sick & tired of them and we kind of crave for this particular type.

Now this must be one of the oldest surviving shops that still sells traditional goodies & if you can just ignore the appearance & condition of the shop & its occupants, you will surely enjoy the fruits of their labour.

This shop is run by old men whose skills & devotion will probably be gone & forgotten when they are unable to work anymore. Although the interior of the shop is not your spick & span modern day kitchen, the atmosphere & sight in there is something to behold.

I had to queitly sneek behind these 2 old men to get this shot with my camera-phone while pretending to sms.
Just pretend you did’nt notice the lump of pastry dough that is leaning against the dirty old fan & the sweaty towels that are hanging above.

Wow! this must be the coolest baking tray that I have ever seen and it is even made of wood.
I must get one of this for my baking sessions…that is if I can find an oven big enough.

A last look at the shop as the owner packed our orders……hmmmm! I wonder when was the last time they washed the floor.

OK, back home we can’t wait to sink our teeth into these freshly baked mooncakes.

Oi! who took the other half ??

….And for those of you who are still willing to try out these delicious goodies,

The name of the shop is “Thye Moh Chan Cake House”
It is located at No. 53, Geylang Lorong 27, very near to the Aljunied MRT station.
